NEW YORK-Vendors at the annual International Hotel/Motel & Restaurant Show today reported that a majority of electronic door lock installations now use Radio Frequency ID (RFID) technology.
Since being introduced by vendors such as Saflok/ILCO, Onity, and VingCard Elsafe three or four years ago, RFID systems have grown in popularity to the point where they represent more than half the installations being made this year. While they have all the security benefits of traditional magnetic stripe door lock key cards, RFID key cards have the advantage of being more stable. Magnetic key cards, for example, run the risk of becoming demagnetized when placed against a cell phone.
Vendors expect the number of RFID installations to continue to increase in 2012 as consumer acceptance grows.
