NEW YORK—Angama Mara, two tented camps comprised of 15 suites each overlooking the Masai Mara in Africa, will open in May.
Angama is the Swahili word for “suspended in midair” and describes the camp’s feel since it is perched on a cliff with a view to the Great Migration route below. A venture of veteran hoteliers Nicky and Steve Fitzgerald, Angama Mara borders Kenya’s Mara Triangle and is geared toward wildlife viewing.
The camps are situated where the Ngong Hills scenes were shot in the film Out of Africa, which chronicles writer Karen Blixen’s years in Kenya. The luxury tents are being designed by architects Silvio Rech and Lesley Carstens, who did the Ngorongoro Crater Lodge, North Island and Mombo accommodations. Each tent suite hangs onto the edge of the escarpments, with views overlooking the valley. Interiors are being created by South African designer Annemarie Meintjes.
Prior to creating Angama Mara, Nicky and Steve Fitzgerald were at the helm of &Beyond (formerly CCAfrica) for 15 years: Steve as CEO and Nicky as global marketing and branding director. Before that, they operated Halcyon Hotels together, a hotel and restaurant group they founded in 1983.
