COLUMBUS, OH—As of April 30, 2009, Joe Wheeling will step down as CEO of Red Roof Inn. However, following that date he will remain with the company in a senior advisory capacity and as a member of the company’s board of directors for two years while he oversees a designed smooth transition once his CEO successor is named. Wheeling said he is leaving Red Roof Inn to commit more time to his family. According to the company, he is credited with increasing the brand’s awareness and making it more attractive to investors and consumers with its $250-million national renovation program and NextGen new-build prototype program. Wheeling served as executive vp for Accor North America and COO for Red Roof from 1999 to 2007 when Red Roof was under Accor’s ownership. He was named CEO of Red Roof when it was acquired from Accor in September 2007.
