NEW YORK—Loews Regency Hotel, a newly renovated luxury hotel in Midtown Manhattan, added six designer-inspired Signature Suites, marking the culmination of the hotel’s $100-million transformation earlier this year, including 321 apartment-styled guestrooms; Julien Farel’s new flagship salon and spa; and The Regency Bar & Grill.
“We wanted to offer guests several distinct experiences with the Signature Suites,” said Jonathan Tisch, chairman of Loews Hotels & Resorts, of the suites designed by Nate Berkus Associates, Meyer Davis Studio, Inc., Rottet Studio and Haynes-Roberts, Inc. “Each suite embodies a unique perspective and aesthetic, but together they represent a collective New York look and feel that Loews Regency has always evoked, and that is part of the special energy that has made the hotel a home away from home for guests for over 50 years.”
Nate Berkus
The Nate Berkus-designed suite on the 21st floor anchors the Signature Suites. Berkus looked to Loews Regency’s history and the energy of Park Avenue to create a suite that feels like home with a distinctly New York sense of style, according to the company. The 1,000-sq.-ft. suite includes a formal living room, dining room, kitchen, bedroom and balcony, in a mix of sand-blasted oak flooring, patinated metals and layered furnishings.
“What a great project!” Berkus said. “The challenge in designing any hotel suite is for it to not feel generic or staid. The goal is always to create a space that feels fresh and new and unexpected, like you’re stepping into someone’s home, where every detail—from the art, to the accessories on the hall table—is thought out and deliberate.”
Bohemian and Bespoke
Meyer Davis Studio Inc., helmed by Will Meyer and Gray Davis, brings the aesthetic of SoHo and the clean lines of Chelsea to Park Avenue with the Uptown Bohemian suite, located on the 21st floor. Reflecting the history of New York and Midtown Manhattan’s contemporary art scene, a backdrop suggests the SoHo lofts of artists like Donald Judd, while tinted plaster walls and bold furnishings are reminiscent of Julian Schnabel, according to the company.
Meyer Davis Studio Inc. is also the design mind behind Bespoke, located on the 20th floor, which was inspired by the fashion industry of New York City. With a nod to designers like Halston and Geoffrey Beene, this space provides careful stitching, tailored finishing and stylish furnishings.
The Grand Suites
Loews Regency tapped international architecture and design firm Rottet Studio for The Grand Suites, inspired by a singular cultural icon, Marilyn Monroe. Suite 1620,The Glamour Suite, is an interpretation of what might have been Marilyn’s Park Avenue pied a terre, evoking how she would have lived in the heyday of her celebrity glamour in New York City.
Influenced by the flowing lines and soft, indirectly lit planes of Streamline Moderne, the living room features a continuous cove light ceiling and a Wenge-clad wall behind the 55-in. TV that flows down into a waterfall-edge entertainment cabinet below. The custom carpets are an updated take on the neat, tailored lines of tufted upholstery and the chic, leopard print couture of the era. In the bedroom, a pink leather, diamond-studded headboard glows at the edges.
Next door is the Pop Art Suite, which plays off Marilyn’s immortalization by pop artist icon Andy Warhol. A custom-designed “Pop Art” carpet flows in large scale from the living room into the bedroom where a pastel-lacquered wardrobe wall creates a suede-lined niche for the bed headboard. Black and white architectural finishes, inspired by comic books and ad-based Pop Art graphics, provide a bold background, while pastels, saturated primaries and jewel-toned materials and finishes provide pops of color.
Haynes-Roberts, Inc.
Haynes-Roberts, Inc., a Manhattan based residential interior design firm, created the last suite inspired by the apartments of Milan in the 1970s. Upholstered vintage furniture and newly designed custom pieces are set against a backdrop of textural building materials. In the bedrooms, velvet headboards set against suede walls are styled with over-scale vintage ceramic lamps.
