NEW YORK—An armed robbery and shooting took place yesterday at a jewelry store within the Waldorf-Astoria hotel here. A retired New York City Police Department detective who worked as an armed employee was wounded in the incident at Cellini Jewelers, which is located in the lobby of the hotel. Hotel security staffers took the suspect into custody after the shooting, which occurred shortly before 3:00 in the afternoon.
