NEW YORK- HOTEL BUSINESS. has learned that hotels in New York City, possibly including the Marriott Marquis, have recently received bomb threats. According to a letter from the Network of Executive Women in Hospitality (NEWH), a number of hotels, as well as the NEWH, have received letters that “raised alleged security issues.”
A spokesperson from the Midtown North Police Precinct in Manhattan would only say that police have received 911 calls regarding threats made against hotels, and that each call was investigated but turned out to be unfounded. “We never found any explosive devices,” said a spokesperson from the precinct.
A spokesperson from the Marriott Marquis said that the hotel is aware of the reports about letters received by “various entities,” and that currently, “there is a matter under investigation.” No one from the Marriott would comment on the nature of the threat. But, the spokesperson said, the hotel has “added security based on ongoing conversations with authorities and in preparation of our busy time of year.”
Police said they are working with area hotels to assure that “adequate security detail” would be provided this weekend during the IH/M&RS conference being held at the Jacob Javits Convention Center. (11/8/00) –Diana M. Rodriguez
