SAN FRANCISCO- San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown led a parade of elected officials in a demonstration September 4, calling for a boycott of the citys Marriott hotel and its worldwide chain.
For four years, workers at the downtown Marriott have tried unsuccessfully to negotiate a union contract with the hotels management, and yesterdays protest was designed to put pressure on Marriott officials.
Protesters were invigorated by the appearance of Brown, who said, “I hope management comes to its senses and gives you a union contract. Other appearances were made by state Senate President Pro Tem John Burton, and San Francisco Democratic Assembly members Kevin Shelley and Carole Migden. Burton and others said the boycott would cost the hotel millions of dollars.
A spokesman for the 1,500-room property said the boycott will not affect the Marriott chain, and that it may only serve to antagonize hotel management. (9/5/00)
