Hodges Ward Elliott has released a statement on Elliott’s passing:
“Hodges Ward Elliott (HWE) is saddened to share the news that company President Mark Elliott passed away unexpectedly on June 12th.
Mark joined the firm in 1983 and has served as the strategic leader of the firm’s various business lines for nearly 40 years. Along with his partners, he dedicated his career towards shaping the culture of HWE and his steady-hand approach remains a central pillar of the firm’s overall philosophy.
Mark is also one of the true legends in the hospitality industry and over the course of his career, he sold more hotels than any other individual in the U.S. He was a past co-chairman of Industry Real Estate Finance Advisory Council, was a recipient of the prestigious “Jack A. Shaffer Financial Advisor of the Year” and “C. Everett Johnson” industry awards and has long been one of the hotel sector’s most recognized spokespeople and experts.
Family, friends and associates alike are devastated by the loss of Mark. He conducted himself every day with integrity and a competitive spirit that inspired everyone he worked with. Beyond his professional accomplishments, his intelligence, kindness, and friendship were treasured by all who knew him on a personal level. HWE will continue in Mark’s legacy, though he will be forever missed.
Mark is survived by his mother, Dorothy Elliott, sister, Cynthia Ruggles, loving wife of 38 years, Lorri, daughter Brynn and son Paxton.”
Mark Elliott, president of Hodges Ward Elliott has passed away.
He joined the firm in 1983 and serves as strategic leader of the firm’s various business lines. HWE has sold more hotels corporately in the U.S. than any other company, and he sold more hotels than any other individual, according to the company. In the last 27 years, he personally sold and/or financed almost 1,500 hotels and approximately 297,000 rooms, with a dollar volume of approximately $52 billion.
“During my first year of brokerage, I was determined to try different sectors and settle on a specialty by the end of the first year,” he told Hotel Business in 2016. “After six months, I found a hotel deal that Hodges Ward Associates was brokering and fell in love with the business. There were many moving parts—it was a national business, not a regional business—and there were few companies that specialized in the lodging sector.”
Among his transactions were the New York Palace Hotel ($805 million); New York Edition; London Edition and Miami Beach Edition (aggregate $816 million); Milford New York Hotel ($325 million); 701 Times Square Development ($815 million); and a number of hotel portfolio deals, including CBM ($655 million), Apple REIT Six ($1.2 billion), White Lodging ($1.2 billion), Archon ($1.6 billion), RLJ ($900 million), Ocean Properties ($746.1 million) and CNL ($420 million).
Elliott was past co-chairman of Industry Real Estate Finance Advisory Council (IREFAC) and mentioned annually as the leading hotel broker by Real Estate Forum, Commercial Property News and other publications. He was a recipient of the Jack A. Shaffer Financial Advisor of the Year award and the C. Everett Johnson Award, and has been a speaker at the Harvard Business School. He was also a participant in Hotel Business roundtables.

With the passing of Mark Elliott, our industry lost one of its true icons; not just because of his historic business accomplishments, but also because of his character, integrity, generosity and heart. Mark was one of the finest human beings most of us have ever met. Every interaction with Mark left you better than you were, as there was always a purpose and intentionality to Mark; whether he was sharing something profoundly philosophical or spiritual, providing an economics lesson, nailing a great sports analogy, or just giving you a good hearty laugh. He always made you feel something! Sadly, we now feel a deep and unrelenting sorrow at the passing of our dear friend. The irony is, if Mark were here for one more minute, he would put his arm around all of us and tell us to turn that mournful energy into something good and powerful. To use his life and memory as a guidepost; not in the amount of time he lived, but in the uniquely vibrant way he approached his family life, his business life and his spiritual life. I’m crying as I write this, so I have yet to move past my own grief, but I can already feel his arm around my shoulder, reminding me it’s going to be OK.
On behalf of Libby and myself, as well as the entire team at Davidson, our hearts pour out to Lorri, Paxton and Brynn. You gave Mark so much purpose and you helped him become the incomparable man that he was in the flesh and the incomparable soul that will live on forever. You may not know it, but you have a massive extended family because of Mark, and we will all do anything to show you our love and support.
We love you and will miss you dearly my friend!
So glad I got to meet and know him in my final few years at HCS. Always knew he had a great mind so not surprised by his accomplishments but still amazing! So sorry for the families loss.
What a tragic loss for Mark’s family, HWE and the entire industry. Mark was a tremendous leader who made a positive impact on all those he came into contact with. His work ethic, vision, knowledge and integrity set the standard for all others to emulate. I was fortunate to have collaborated with Mark and he will always be the “best ever” in my book.
