Hotel del Coronado Completes $13M Renovation

SAN DIEGO—Hotel del Coronado, a national historic landmark that originally opened in 1888, located here on Coronado Island, recently underwent a $13-million renovation.

The two-year renovation project encompassed the original Victorian guestrooms, Beach Village villas and cottages, common areas and dining venues. The resort totals 757 guestrooms.

Hotel del Coronado, which hosted the filming of Some Like It Hot starring Marilyn Monroe in the 1950s, has an exclusive enclave within the resort called Beach Village, which was part of the renovation. Beach Village consists of 78 private beach cottages and villas, steps from the beach and the Pacific. Dallas-based interior design Gina Joyce led the project. Joyce is the principal at Joyce Design Group, a firm specializing in four- and five-star hotels, resorts, restaurants and country clubs.

Beach Village accommodations attempts to echo Hotel del Coronado’s landmark architecture, its famous turrets and red-shingled roof and white painted lap siding, according to the hotel. Modern interiors include two- to three-bedrooms, with dining and living rooms featuring fireplaces and gourmet kitchens. All offer ocean views from balconies and private terraces, some with their own soaking tub and fire pit.

Beach “Villagers” receive exclusive entry to secluded plunge pools with cabanas, use of the famed Windsor Club Cottage and private beach access. The oceanfront cottages and villas at Beach Village have been renovated to feature a palette of blue, turquoise and beige.

The new color scheme is incorporated into all new furnishings, bedding, artwork and design accents. Redone interiors incorporate new wood and glass lamps, beach-inspired artwork, transitional-style furnishings and guestroom accessories, as well as new Conrad shades in natural fabric embellished with sparkling glass.
