PITTSBURGH In the competition to build a new, 750-room convention center hotel, Hyatt Hotels Corp. is asking for less in public subsidies than competitor Forest City Enterprises.
However, according to Allegheny County Executive Jim Roddey, the amount of subsidies requested by either developer is still too high. Roddey is considering other options.
One is to pay for the new hotel with a tax-free bond issue. Such a move, which would make the hotel publicly owned, could open the bidding to more hotel operators. (8/25/00)
