NATIONAL REPORT—Shovels are in the ground for new-build projects across the U.S. From the Midwest to the South to the East Coast, here’s a look at developments in the works:
Cambria to Expand in Minneapolis
Choice Hotels International Inc. and C&O Bloomington LLC have broke ground on the Cambria Hotel Minneapolis-Saint Paul Airport. Slated to open in 2019, the five-story, 170-room hotel is one of three Cambria hotels in the Minneapolis area, joining the Cambria Hotel Minneapolis Maple Grove and the upcoming Cambria Hotel Downtown Minneapolis.
The property is close to the Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport, the Mall of America, the Light Rail and near the corporate offices of Best Buy, Ecolab, General Mills, Target, UnitedHealth Group and U.S. Bancorp.
The new Cambria will have several upscale amenities:
- Spa-like bathrooms
- Contemporary guestrooms with plush bedding
- Fitness center and indoor pool
- 4,000 sq. ft. of multi-function meeting space
- On-site dining with local cuisine, craft beer, wine, specialty cocktails and small bites
- Locally inspired design
Ceres Enterprises LLC will manage the hotel and the Orlean Company will collaborate on the development.
Cambria to Come to Austin, TX
Choice Hotels International Inc. has finalized an agreement with Brendan Gilyan of Mopac Hotel Development LP to develop the Cambria Hotel Austin near the Domain Shopping Mall. The five-story, 135-room upscale hotel is slated to open in 2021.
The new Cambria hotel will be within a mixed-use development in northwest Austin, TX, offering guests access to the regional offices of Apple, Amazon, Google, Facebook and Dell. The property is also near several local attractions, including the Rock Rose Entertainment District, St. David’s Medical Center and the University of Texas at Austin.
Among its upscale amenities:
- Spa-style bathrooms with Bluetooth mirrors
- Contemporary guestrooms with plush bedding
- Fitness center and pool
- 5,500 sq. ft. of multi-function meeting space
- Upscale bistro and bar with local craft beer, wine, specialty cocktails and small bites
- Outdoor courtyard with fire pit and gathering space
- Locally inspired design
Hyatt Place Underway in Boston
Hyatt and McWhinney have begun construction on a Hyatt Place hotel in the Seaport neighborhood along South Boston’s waterfront. Hyatt Place Boston Seaport District is expected to open in the spring of 2020 with 294 guestrooms with 6,800 sq. ft. of restaurant space.

A Hyatt affiliate will manage the hotel, which will highlight the Seaport District’s historic port activity and nautical design theme created by Boston’s Group One Partners. Suffolk Construction is the general contractor for all components of the development and Arrowstreet serves as the project architect.
Located across the street from the Blue Hills Bank Pavilion outdoor concert venue, the mixed-use development will also have a luxury apartment complex and more than 400 underground parking spaces.
IHG Expands Even Hotels Footprint With Three New Signings
InterContinental Hotels Group will develop three Even Hotels properties in Michigan, North Carolina and Texas—Even Hotel Ann Arbor, Even Hotel Charlotte and Even Hotel Austin. All three properties are expected to open before the first quarter of 2020.
- Even Hotel Ann Arbor—The 111-room, four-story hotel will be proximate to the University of Michigan, various biotechnology, healthcare, consumer product and technology companies and located near the Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW). The Even Hotel Ann Arbor will have 2,432 sq. ft. of meeting space, Athletic Studio, a business center, an indoor pool and spa, an outdoor garden and patio and on-site parking. Expected to open in Q3 2019, the hotel is owned by Graham Hotel Systems. This will be the first Even Hotel in Michigan.
- Even Hotel Charlotte—The 181-room, nine-story hotel will be located in downtown Charlotte, NC, close to numerous banking, financial and corporate offices, as well as major attractions including the Bank of America Stadium, the Spectrum Center, NASCAR Headquarters and the Charlotte Convention Center. This new-build hotel will have 1,600 sq. ft. of meeting space, a business center, Athletic Studio and on-site parking. Expected to open in Q1 2019, the Even Hotel Charlotte is owned by Mayfair Street Partners. This will be the first Even Hotel for North Carolina.
- Even Hotel Austin—The 123-room, five-story hotel will be located in The Domain area of Austin, close to the city’s technology corridor, which includes Dell, IBM, Amazon, Apple and Hewlett-Packard. This new-build hotel will have 2,500 sq. ft. of meeting space, a business center, Athletic Studio and on-site parking. Expected to open in Q1 2020, the Even Hotel Austin is owned by Mopac Hotel Development LP. This will be the first Even Hotel to open in Texas.
All three hotels will have a fitness experience with the brand’s signature Athletic Studio. Every guestroom will include an in-room fitness zone with a dedicated workout space with fitness equipment. The hotels will also have the brand’s signature Cork & Kale café.
My Place Groundbreaking Tour Celebrates New Properties
My Place Hotels had a cross-country tour spanning five cities across four states. President/CEO Ryan Rivett and EVP of Franchise Development Terry Kline led the team from My Place Headquarters in Aberdeen, SD to the quad-city of Davenport, IA, where the tour kicked off with the grand opening celebration for Iowa’s fourth My Place Hotel.
In addition, the tour included grand opening events in Chicagoland and Colorado Springs and culminated on Sept. 13 with groundbreaking and grand opening events in Southern Utah.
Construction Continues for Marriott HQ in Bethesda, MD
Demolition of all structures is complete and debris will continue to be removed over the next couple of weeks. Underground utility work along Woodmont and Norfolk Avenues is nearing completion and should wrap up in the next week. Delivery of construction materials is expected to continue over the next few weeks.
