RIO GRANDE, PUERTO RICO— The Westin Rio Mar Beach Golf Resort & Spa here will soon be known as the Wyndham Rio Mar – A Wyndham Grand Resort. The 600-room resort is being converted to the Wyndham brand by its ownership group that includes Rio Mar Associates LP, SE and, now, Wyndham Worldwide Corp, which recently purchased a partial interest in the property and obtained its management contract. The resort will officially become a Wyndham on May 10. Wyndham is set to operate the facility under a 20-year agreement. Furthermore, Wyndham plans on developing a tract of land adjacent to the resort into a Wyndham Vacation Ownership timeshare resort over the next several years. Rio Mar Associates, which is led by Tishman Realty Corp., is now planning to carry out a multi-million-dollar renovation and redevelopment of the future Wyndham Rio Mar. This project will involved an overhaul of the casino and upgrades of the golf courses, hotel lobby and guestrooms. When the renovation is complete, the rooms will feature Wyndham’s signature brand elements that were designed by Michael Graves & Associates. This renovation work is on top of other capital improvements that were completed during the past two years at the property. Improvements include the construction of the Mandara Spa and fitness center, room renovations, pool deck enhancements, enhanced access to the property’s semi-private beach and the addition of private cabanas. The 500-acre resort also features a mile-long section of beach; 48,000 square feet of function space; two golf courses; a 7,000-square-foot casino; 11 restaurants, lounges and entertainment venues; a tennis center; a water sports center; and two beach-front pools. When the conversion is complete, the Wyndham Rio Mar will represent the largest single addition to the Wyndham brand since 2005.
