VIRGINIA BEACH, VA—The Cavalier Hotel, originally built in 1927 by architect Clarence Neff here, has been accepted to the National Register of Historic Places.

The property is undergoing a 2-year renovation by Gold Key | PHR Hotels & Resorts in conjunction with architecture firm Hanbury Evans Wright Vlattas + Company and general contractor W.M. Jordan Company. It will reopen in 2016 as a 5-star property in Marriott’s Autograph Collection. The hotel will feature 90 guestrooms, an onsite bourbon distillery, a ballroom and world-class restaurant.

The rooms will be gutted and rebuilt to be bigger. The main floor will be renovated but will feature early-20th century crystal glass pieces and phonographs. Also remaining are the poolside vistas and loggias.

The Cavalier Hotel’s sister property will be rebuilt and called the Oceanfront Marriott Hotel. That property, expected to open in 2017, originally opened in 1929 and will undergo a $4-million renovation.

The mixed-use plan for the overall site development will also add 85 homes, including estate homes, cottages and bungalows. They will be built on the lawn of the Grand Hotel.
