INTERNATIONAL REPORT—Whether it’s inspired by a seaside locale or commemorating a milestone anniversary, global properties are sprucing up their offerings for today’s modern traveler. Here’s a look at six of them:
Westin Resort & Spa, Cancún Completes Extensive Reno
The Westin Resort & Spa, Cancún, owned by Vistana Signature Experiences Inc., an operating business of ILG, unveiled a top-to-bottom redesign of all the resort’s public areas, the launch of Arena Sports Bar & Restaurant and the debut of a Flowrider surf simulator.
Inspired by the locale, the renovated lobby offers water views to create an atmosphere in harmony with the destination. The new lobby decor has a palette of blue and green tones enhanced by a variety of marine accents.
Complementing these renovations will be 44 studio and two-bedroom villas that are scheduled to open this spring. These accommodations will be equipped with modern kitchens, washers and dryers, living and dining areas, spacious balconies, as well as the Heavenly Bed and Heavenly Bath, enhanced with the brand’s Heavenly Shower and White Tea Aloe amenities.
Guestroom Redo for Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa
Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa has embarked on a $26.5-million renovation of the resort’s 508 guestrooms and suites. The historic resort, situated on 23 oceanfront acres at Pu‘u Keka‘a (Black Rock) on Ka‘anapali Beach, was the first resort to open in Ka‘anapali in 1963 and celebrates its 55th anniversary on Jan. 23.
The new guestroom design by AHL, formerly Architects Hawaii Ltd., blends past with present, honoring the history and sense of place found at Pu‘u Keka‘a while modernizing the living and bathroom spaces with timeless furnishings, textiles, decor and artwork. Colors and textures utilized throughout the resort’s six buildings are inspired by the culture and island landscapes of Maui, Lanai and Molokai.
The refresh is scheduled for completion this summer.
Las Vegas Hotel Unveils New Digs
Ellis Island Hotel, Casino & Brewery, an off-Strip mainstay for nearly 50 years, today has completed a multimillion-dollar renovation of its 289 guestrooms and 12 suites.
Every room was gutted and features new tile, carpets, bathrooms and furnishings. Other elements include USB chargers added to all bedside tables and mini refrigerators and safes included free of charge.
And, to commemorate the renovation, every room will include a free 32-ounce growler, along with a complimentary pour of any Ellis Island Brewery craft beer.
Philly Sheraton Showcases New Look
The Sheraton Suites Philadelphia Airport has completed a top-to-bottom renovation, including 250 all-suite guestrooms, lobby, restaurant & bar, meeting spaces, fitness center, indoor pool, and Sheraton Club Lounge.
Balongue Interiors led the design direction for the full scope renovation, which focused on providing guests with a modern, effortless travel experience, according to the brand. Balongue pulled together neutral pieces with pops of color and disrupted geometries in all guestrooms and in the new front lobby, while also adding color artwork and photography of historic Philadelphia.
“Vector, the new restaurant and bar in the Sheraton Suites Philadelphia Airport, presented a unique design challenge,” said Richard Stokes the lead architect on the project. “The hotel, designed and built in the 1980s, was dated, and featured a vast open atrium that is not conducive to the more intimate dining and bar experience most guests desire. The solution was to create a modern insertion into the atrium area that reduces the volume of space above diners, while remaining light and open. A wood shell structure was created, with an open slat structure that allows the natural light to filter down to every table, while creating a more defined and intimate experience within the restaurant.”
