SCOTTSDALE, AZ The Fairmont Scottsdale Princess is pursuing a major expansion that includes the addition of 200 casitas, a nine-hole par-3 golf course, a 200-seat restaurant, additional meeting space and a lagoon.

According to a state Land Department application, The Princess has applied to buy 37-acres west of the resort that could be worth close to $18 million.

Marriott plans to break ground next month on its 950-room Desert Ridge resort a few miles west of The Fairmont Scottsdale Princess and the 750-room Westin Kierland is also scheduled to begin construction this fall. The aggressive expansion planned by The Princess is seen as an attempt to compete more effectively against impending competition. (9/22/00)
