COSTA MESA, CA- In a report released first to HOTELBUSINESS., Atlas Hospitality Corp.s annual survey of hotel construction activity in the California markets and submarkets indicates that most of the current construction activity here is occurring in northern California.
While, according to Atlas Hospitality, 264 new projects representing 34,569 rooms are planned or under construction in northern California, only 164 projects with 32,095 rooms are planned or under construction in southern California.
Within the northern California region, the most active submarket is Alameda County, with 38 projects representing 5,233 rooms. The second most active submarket is Santa Clara County, with 38 projects, but these only represent 5,070 rooms.
In southern California, the most active county by far is San Diego County, with 51 projects and 11,196 rooms, while Los Angeles has 38 projects underway or planned, with 7,117 rooms. And while Orange County has only 33 projects planned or under construction, they are larger projects, representing an aggregate of 9,265 rooms.
The least active counties are, in the north, Sacramento County, with 19 projects and 3,292 rooms, and in the south, Riverside and San Bernadino Counties, with 10 projects each and 1,938 and 760 rooms, respectively. (9/20/00) – Jay Nussbaum
