Miwa Launches New Cardlock System

NEW YORK— Miwa Lock Company has unveiled its next generation programmable cardlock system that helps hotels know “who’s staying there,” according to Dan Staton, representative/Miwa. The new cardlock system features dual reader technology that enables them to read both conventional magnetic strip cards and microchip smart cards, allowing them to save on expensive conversion costs later. “A new hotel can look down the line at technology, and choose something that will last,” said Staton, who noted that the new cardlock system allows hotels to use the magnetic strip now, and the smart card later when the technology prevails. He added that the smart cards also allow hotels to keep track of guests electronically, logging information for loyalty points or guest profiles. “[In addition], guests can register at a hotel online at home, and then go straight to their room without stopping to check-in,” he said. The guest’s smart credit card can be programmed as a room key from home, and then used to open a guestroom door or charge hotel services. When asked if the new technology causes a potential lapse in security by allowing guests to bypass the front desk, Staton said, “Guests want the convenience of not having to deal with the check- in process and long lines…We’ll have to see what happens and whether hotels are going to want to see a photo ID.” — Diana M.
