WASHINGTON—Marriott Marquis Washington, DC, has received a Silver certification by the U.S. Green Building Council for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), verified by the Green Building Certification Institute.

Opened last May, the hotel is owned by  Quadrangle Development, along with its partner Capstone, and is operated by Marriott International, Inc. It earned LEED Silver certification for its building and operating standards to conserve energy and reduce water and carbon dioxide emissions.

The hotel was designed by Cooper Carry Architects and TVS Architects in a joint-venture, with interior design by HOK Design.

“As we approach our first anniversary in May, we are pleased to have accomplished LEED Silver certification, an important goal since the hotel’s first blueprints were drawn up,” said General Manager Dan Nadeau. “Marriott Marquis is committed to sustainability and we continue to evolve our practices and technologies in order to increase our efficiency and reduce our carbon footprint.”

“From the hotel’s conception, the entire project team was committed to delivering a building that would minimize its impact on the environment,” said Robert Neal, principal, Cooper Carry Architects. “As design, development and construction professionals working in our cities, we should be ever mindful of our ecological responsibilities and the health of our communities.  With this in mind, we are pleased that we were able to receive this certification recognizing our efforts from the Green Building Council.”

“More than ever, hospitality properties are joining the wave of being environmentally responsible similar to work place and commercial interior projects. This is an incredible edict that I am thrilled to be entrusted to and I am optimistic that other brands will also look to carrying forth a commitment to being green,” said Julia Monk, SVP and director of hospitality design, HOK. “It was a privilege to be involved in helping Marriott, Quadrangle Development and Capstone create one of the largest, most important hotel properties yet. Having it receive the LEED Silver accreditation and be located in our nation’s capital bares testament to its level of importance.”

Connected to the Walter E. Washington Convention Center via an underground concourse, Marriott Marquis Washington, DC, offers more than 105,000 sq. ft. of meeting space, 1,175 rooms including 49 suites, and five signature dining experiences. Situated at 901 Massachusetts Ave., NW and spanning almost an entire large city block, it is one of only five Marriott Marquis properties in the country.
