MA Won’t Collect Hotel Tax For Red Sox

BOSTON The state is refusing to collect new hotel taxes to help fund a $665 million ballpark plan for the Red Sox. The 1/4-point tax hike was supposed to take effect Nov. 7, just 90 days after a massive subsidy package was signed into law on Beacon Hill. But the Executive Office of Administration & Finance balked at hitting travelers with the added levy – saying theres no need for the $150,000-a-month revenue stream until the team signs a lease with the city. The added hotel tax is designed to provide a partial revenue stream to repay $140 million in subsidies that Menino agreed to provide for land acquisition and site preparation for the ballpark. The City Council, however, has yet to sign off on the agreement. (12/21/00)
