NEW YORK–– The assortment of educational seminars continued today at the International Hotel/Motel & Restaurant show here. The session entitled “Designing for Todays Traveler” gave three designers the opportunity to discuss with the audience a variety of subjects influencing their industry. Moderated by Stacy Silver, group publisher, HOTEL BUSINESS the panel included Jonathan Nehmer, president, Jonathan Nehmer + Assoc.; Amy Jakubowski, partner, Brennan Beer Gorman Monk Interiors and Ron Swidler, senior vp, Gettys. The panel agreed that the “Lifestyle Trend” is continues to hit its stride as hotels begin to focus more on how to tailor the design of the property to the way its target guest lives. “Lifestyle doesnt necessarily mean modern and contemporary,” said Jakubowski. “People have different lifestyles: healthy, active, decadent, etc. We are developing that into design.” Swidler noted that hotels are moving away from the notion that a property must appeal to all demographics. “Market segmentation is starting to occur. Every hotel doesnt need to appeal to everyone.” But he also added hotels aimed at a certain generation can often attract more than just their target group. “Often we aim at a certain target generation and end up hitting another as well. It can appeal to several generations,” he said. Green design and sustainability was top of mind for the panel. “I think these days if you dont address it, youre making a big mistake,” Jakubowski cautioned and stressed the importance of communicating with the contractors on projects. “The industry is now starting to respond and soon its going to be required at hotels regardless of the cost.” Technology was also top of mind for the designers. “Ten years ago a plasma television was $10,000,” said Nehmer. “Now they are much more affordable and are becoming expected.” He added technology advances are also facilitating the sustainability movement. “Technology has created products that are more energy efficient such as card key light sensors, HVAC, and water conserving fixtures. Were seeing more manufacturers on the show floor with these products.”
