Employee Free Choice Act Introduced In Congress; AH&LA Strongly Opposes Bill

WASHINGTON— Today in Washington, congressional legislation was introduced that, if enacted, will allow the formation of unions through the public signing of authorization cards and not the current private-ballot standard. Titled the Employee Free Choice Act, the bill is being strongly opposed by the American Hotel & Lodging Association, which stated the act is a direct assault on the rights of ever hotel worker in the U.S. The Employee Free Choice Act counters the current unionization laws that are based on the National Labor Relations Act of 1935. That act stipulates that it is the right of workers to participate in a secret ballot election in deciding whether to unionize in the workplace.
