CHICAGO—The Spa at JW Chicago is infusing hemp in its spa services and products. But, wait. It’s not what you think. Hemp is a variety of the Cannabis sativa plant species that is a domestic crop used for over a century—not the psychoactive form of cannabis.

“For decades, medical professionals overlooked hemp extract because the psychoactive cannabinoids took center stage. Now, the medicinal potential of hemp extract has made its way to mainstream audiences,” said Marie Parodi, spa and wellness director of JW Marriott Chicago. “Preclinical trials over the past 40 years found hemp extract shows promise as a natural anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, neuroprotectant, antidepressant, along with many other benefits.”

The misconceptions around this healing ingredient can be a hurdle, if not properly understood. Parodi clearly explained its benefits to guests: “Active hemp oil, also known as the whole plant extract, provides numerous benefits without altering the mental state. This active ingredient is applied topically, and provides targeted local action resulting in remedy of pain and instant relief.”

Hemp is the newest addition to the brand’s evolving wellness program, which includes products by Mary’s Nutritionals within select treatments.

“Marriott International takes a progressive approach to healing and wellness as it recognizes results-driven trends within the industry,” she said. “I’m familiar with hemp as a fiber for natural clothing, but not for spa treatments.”

Parodi collaborated with Mary’s Nutritionals to bring together the best of wellness and relaxation with natural components to offer safe and effective pain relief. One hundred percent organic and U.S.-grown hemp extract is incorporated into the spa’s Deep Healing Muscle Treatment enhancement service with a muscle freeze product, which can be added to any of the spa’s massage services. Select Mary’s Nutritionals products are also available at the spa’s boutique store.

“We are proud to offer products from Mary’s Nutritionals as an addition to a guest’s treatment at our spa,” said Parodi. “With a growing public understanding and acceptance of hemp, these cutting-edge products work to further nurture the skin and body as a perfect complement to our spa services.”
