BUFFALO, NY— The Buffalo News reported that tourism may get a boost next summer with the arrival of Pope John Paul II, and the Christian festival, World Youth Days. World Youth Days will be held in Toronto, Canada July 22-28, and is projected to bring in 750,000 visitors from 150 countries. The festival will culminate with a mass led by the Pope in Toronto’s Downsview Park. Organizers of the festival see Buffalo/Niagara as an important gateway to the event, which is geared toward 16- to 33-year-old Christians. The Canadian side of Niagara Falls is anticipated to bear the brunt of festival-goers however, officials at the Buffalo Niagara Convention & Visitors Bureau believe that some tourists will extend their trip to visit Our Lady of Victory Basilica and National Shrine in Lackawanna.
