CELEBRATION, FL—What’s hiding in your guestroom? Hotel cleanliness is front of mind for travelers and should always remain a top priority for hotel operators. Violet Defense Technology has launched a line of products that is designed to disinfect an entire room, killing up to 99.9% of common germs.
“As a business executive, I was traveling frequently and constantly getting ill from the germs that surround us in normal, everyday spaces. I knew there had to be a better way to protect the world from these harmful germs,” said Mark Nathan, president & CEO, Violet Defense Technology. “Combining knowledge in photonics and quantum physics, along with biology and engineering, we developed a breakthrough technology that uses the proven germ-killing power of UV and violet-blue light to kill bacteria and viruses.”
The technology has been incorporated into the company’s Surface & Air Germ Elimination (S.A.G.E.) line of products, which includes whole room units, bathroom fan covers and mobile units.
Cleanliness is in the hands of the individual and, according to Nathan, there are many places in hotels that can be difficult to keep clean using traditional methods—everything from remote controls to bedding to bathrooms.
“Spaces more easily addressed with traditional chemicals run the risk that an area would be missed or inconsistently cleaned, which is purely a function of human variability,” he said. “We have found that people using chemicals don’t actually realize how long surfaces need to remain wet with disinfectants prior to wiping down to reach those claims of killing 99.9% of germs. We also know the challenges that anyone with a kitchen faces in protecting customers against foodborne pathogens that make so many people ill every year.”
The Violet Defense anti-microbial product line, called S.A.G.E. UV, deploys a broad spectrum of ultraviolet and violet-blue light that has been proven effective at killing up to 99.9% of harmful germs, including E. Coli, salmonella, norovirus, and MRSA, according to the company.
“The energy from the light actually attacks the germs at the DNA and RNA level, causing these organisms to die, preventing them from reproducing,” he said. “Our S.A.G.E. UV whole room unit is designed to sanitize a standard room in about 30 minutes, with our S.A.G.E. UV bathroom fan cover designed to easily retrofit into an existing bath fan and clean an average bathroom in the same 30 minutes.”
According to Nathan, the company’s products have been tested by an independent, third-party laboratory against E. Coli, salmonella, MRSA and norovirus. “Results showed that our products kill up to 99.9% of these pathogens from distances as far away as three meters [9.8 ft.],” he said.
Hotels know just how important cleanliness is to their customers through online reviews, customer satisfaction ratings and other research studies, explained Nathan.
“In fact, as many as 85% of customers rank cleanliness as the most important factor in selecting a hotel,” he said. “We also know there has been a growing trend in hotels appealing to people’s interest in wellness. We believe that combining these two attributes can lend itself to higher customer satisfaction, if not higher occupancy rates and premiums. With our technology, hotels could bring their rooms, fitness centers and kitchens to a new level of clean. We believe customers will not only be more satisfied with the cleanliness of the hotel, but also possibly pay more for those benefits.”
