FT. WORTH, TX— According to the PhoCusWright Consumer Travel Trends Survey for 2001, publicly traded Travelocity.com ranked first in the categories “most-visited online travel site, “most-used online travel site for buying travel online and “favorite site to buy travel online by— who else?— online travelers. The survey reported the website came in as the most popular place to purchase travel online by a two-to-one margin over other travel sites. An independent travel intelligence company, PhoCusWright’s survey also concluded that 27 million Americans bought travel online last year, up from 21 million last year, with online travel buyers now representing 13% of the travel population. In addition, PhoCusWright found 25% of online travelers visited Travelocity within the past year to purchase travel on the site. Twice as many survey respondents visited Travelocity.com, compared to 12% for the next closest competitor. Travelocity.com provides Internet and wireless reservations information for airlines, hotels and car rental companies, as well as vacation packages, tour and cruise departures and information on destinations. Conducted annually, the PhoCusWright survey looks at the customer experience of shopping for travel online. The survey was conducted by telephone among a random sample of Americans across the country. More than 10,000 individuals were contacted to obtain a sample of 501 “online travelers— Americans whove flown via commercial carrier in the last year and used the Internet in the last month, the company reported.
