CHICAGO— TravelCLICK reported that hotel room nights and revenue booked electronically during 1Q grew at a rapid rate. Room nights were up 6% over the same period last year while revenue, fueled by a 4% increase in average rate, was up 10%. The statistics, which were compiled from TravelCLICK’s database, showed consumer online hotel bookings made through intermediary websites, such as Expedia, represented nearly 17% of all reservations booked through the Internet. The travel agent component of the GDS grew 8% in revenue this year, while the Internet component grew 119% in the first quarter of 2001. The top five destination markets for total hotel e-distribution in terms of room nights during the first quarter were New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Washington, DC.
