TAMPA, FL— Eying a recovery in the tourism industry here by 2004, developers are mulling projects in the downtown area and near the University of South Florida, according to a national hotel industry consultant. The Plasencia Group said projects are being discussed for sites near the port and the convention center, as well as an extended-stay or limited-service hotel near the university. “We dont think the Tampa market is ready yet for a Ritz Carlton or Four Seasons,” said Lou Plasencia, president/CEO of the Tampa-based firm. “But its getting closer.” Although generally only one hotel out of 10 ever move from the discussion phase to actual ground-breaking, Plasencia likes Tampas chances. “I think at this point the odds are better than a 50-50 chance you will see new [hotel]development in downtown Tampa in the course of the next 24 months,” he said.
