WASHINGTON, DC—The Mayflower Renaissance Hotel, listed on the National Register of Historic Places and Historic Hotels of America, will be entering the final phase of a top-to-bottom renovation on October 16, 2014, with the renovation of all 583 rooms and 74 suites.
The Gettys Group design firm is leading the $20-million project. The design will maintain the 10-story hotel’s history while updating its look and adding new amenities and media to the guest rooms. The final phase of the hotel-wide redo will be completed in October 2015.
The construction will take place floor by floor to minimize the effect on guests and the hotel will remain open. “We’re fortunate that The Mayflower has solid bones,” stated GM John Montano. “The noise will be kept to a minimum. And our reservation department will manage the flow of guests to keep them comfortable and out of range of the construction.”
The new room designs and finishes are inspired by the hotel’s royal past with an emphasis on the present day. A palette of neutral grays accented with regal purple will be utilized. Each room will have contemporary finishes with artwork and vintage-inspired black and white marble bathrooms accented with wood. The rooms will also feature a wall of fame, a wallpaper recreation of the hotel’s guest book, behind the bed, with artistic versions of signatures from famous guests of the property, including President John F. Kennedy, Amelia Earhart and J. Edgar Hoover. Rooms will also feature a 36-in. flat-screen TV, high-speed wireless, ergonomic work area and iPod docking station.
The public spaces have already been redone, including nearly 43,000 sq. ft. of non-traditional configurable conference and events space across 27 rooms with the addition of the 3,000-sq.-ft. Promenade Ballroom. The hotel opened Edgar Bar & Kitchen in 2012.
