NEW YORK— The effect of the terrible events in New York and Washington Sept. 11 will spread much further than the debris still polluting America’s skies. Their impact on the world economy looks likely to be far-reaching, and the travel, tourism and hospitality industry is bound to feel the effects, said reports today. Hotels in and around New York City were in chaos Sept. 11 as travelers were stranded after air travel halted and workers in Manhattan were trapped in the area, looking for a place to rest. Even hotels around Britain’s international airports were in chaos last night after all flights to the USA were cancelled— Richard Tobias, chief executive of the British Incoming Tour Operator Association (BITOA), reported that there were about 100,000 American visitors in Britain yesterday. Tobias urged BITOA members, particularly hotel and other accommodation providers in Britain, to provide every assistance, help and support to those people not able to fly without extra cost. He said: “The USA is Britain’s biggest and most important market. Britain’s tourism industry will not let them down during this dreadful and appalling time.”
