CALGARY, ALBERTA? The debut of the 85-room Calgary Shawnessy Super 8 Motel in Alberta, Canada marked the opening of the brand?s 1,800th motel. Super 8 has been adding 100 properties to its system every seven months in an effort to reach its goal of having open 2,000 motels by the year 2000. Robert Weller, president/ CEO, noted that it was appropriate for the company to celebrate its 1,800th opening in Canada. ?We?ve experienced tremendous growth here in the past four years,? he said. Owned by Royop Hospitality Corp., the master licensee for Super 8 motels in Canada, and Anwil Holdings Ltd., the Calgary Shawnessy Super 8 is a new construction property. There are currently 68 Super 8 Motels in Canada within six provinces and 26 properties under development. ?We?re on track to meet our target of having a total of 100 Super 8 motels in Canada in 2000,? said Marc Staniloff, president of Royop. Super 8 Motels has a total of 110,000 rooms in the U.S., Canada and Singapore.
