PARSIPPANY, NJ HOTEL BUSINESS. has learned that as of April 1, Cendant Corp. s Super 8 Motels is launching “Breakfast with Pizzazz,” a three pronged effort by the economy brand to better compete in the marketplace, while creating greater consistency among properties.
Until now, the brand only required its motels to provide 24-hour coffee. However, said spokeswoman Jennifer Nemeth, approximately 80%-90% of the motels offered a free continental breakfast. The chain felt continental breakfast was too vague and meant different things to different owners/managers. Some motels offered coffee and donuts while others offered more elaborate setups, including cereal and toast bars (especially in newer motels where larger common/breakfast areas are built), she said, therefore skewing guests expectations.
Owners will have to choose one of three breakfast plans: CoffeePlus (coffee, decaf, tea; breakfast pastry or toast bar), Continental Breakfast (add fruit juice, fruit) and SuperStart Breakfast (two juices, milk for cereal, breads, pastries, cereal, fruit) for a three-hour offering between 6 and 10 a.m. Condiments and utensil levels adjust as well.
Part of the reason there are three different plans is that motels have different space accommodations for a breakfast area, and Super 8 did not want motels to have to invest in any type of renovation, said Nemeth. (2/20/01) Stefani C. O Connor
