WHITE PLAINS, NY— Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Inc. has finalized a long-term agreement with SPPTH-Sociedade de Promocao de Projectos Turisticos e Hoteleiros for the exclusive Hotel Convento do Espinheiro to join The Luxury Collection in mid- 2005. The 59-room hotel in Evora, Portugal is part of a 15th century convent that is currently undergoing a complete renovation and conversion for use as a hotel. The property will complement Starwoods portfolio of existing Luxury Collection properties in Europe, according to executives at the company. Starwood said it is focused on new developments in Portugal where it also operates a resort in the Algarve, as well as the Sheraton Porto, the Sheraton Lisbon and the soon-to-open Westin Camporeal Golf and Spa Resort. The newest hotel, formerly the residence of Portuguese kings, is situated in the medieval walled town of Evora, one of Portugals architectural gems and declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Hotel Convento do Espinheiro will feature 53 rooms and six suites, and will also offer a wedding pavilion for up to 300 people, a full service spa, flexible meeting and function space accommodating groups from six to 350, an outdoor / indoor pool and tennis.
