PHILIPSBURG, ST. MAARTEN— HOTEL BUSINESS® has learned SMART 2002, a new industry trade show expected to become an annual event, will be coming to the Caribbean April 25-27 and is designed to showcase the northeastern Caribbean Islands. The show is being sponsored under the auspices of the St. Maarten Hospitality and Trade Association, in conjunction with Association des Hoteliers de Saint Martin, with the support of St. Maarten Tourist Bureau and the St. Martin Tourist Board. The event will take place at the Maho Beach Resort & Casino in St. Maarten. SMART 2002 will feature the 14 island destinations surrounding St. Maarten/St. Martin within an hours flight range, including Anguilla, Antigua, Barbuda, Dominica, Guadeloupe, Montserrat, Nevis, Saba, St. Eustatius, St. Barths, St. Kitts, St. Maarten, St. Martin and Barbados. According to Theo Heyliger, commissioner of tourism, “This event will provide tremendous opportunity each year to highlight our joined tourism products and build on industry relationships. SMART was created to become the Caribbeans premier regional trade show, with CHA [Caribbean Hotel Association] Marketplace as our model for success.” SMART organizers are working with CHA to preschedule all meetings for delegates in advance of the trade show. “Weve been preparing for a year with the best in the industry to ensure the great success of this new Caribbean event,” said SMART chairwoman Liesa Euton-Marinaro. “The synergy is there among our hotel partners and sponsors and we expect to build substantial momentum on behalf of St. Maarten.”— Stefani C.
