SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL— Six Continents Hotels and São Paulo-based Group Sol Invest have inked plans to convert the former internationally renowned Hotel Jaraguá, a major Brazilian tourist destination here in the 1950s, into the new Holiday Inn Select Jaraguá. The $17 million project is part of a major global re-development trend that is transforming abandoned or neglected areas into urban renewal centers. Anticipating a soft opening in June 2003, the 26-story hotel will feature 415 guestrooms and 62 suites. The hotel will retain the original façade, as well as some of its 1950s amenities, such as a 24-hour confectioner’s shop once located in the center of São Paulo. The property also houses 18,000 square feet of meeting space.
