WASHINGTON, D.C.— Mandarin Oriental Management (USA) Inc. has appointed Darrell Sheaffer as general manager of the new Mandarin Oriental, Washington, D.C. Prior to his appointment as GM at the Mandarin Oriental, Sheaffer was employed by Ritz-Carlton Hotels and Resorts for more than 15 years. Most recently he was general manager of the Ritz-Carlton in Palm Beach, FL. Slated to open in the spring of 2004, the 400-room Mandarin Oriental, Washington, D.C. is part of the Portals project located at 1330 Maryland Avenue, SW. In addition to the hotel, the mixed-use development will have upscale office, retail and restaurant components. It is being developed by Republic Properties Corp. Mandarin Oriental operates 18 luxury hotels around the globe and has five additional hotels under development. In addition to the Washington, D.C. property, hotels are planned for New York (opening late 2003); Hong Kong (opening 2005); Tokyo and Boston (both opening in 2006).
