HONG KONG— Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts said it will open a 416-room hotel in Fuzhou, the capital of China’s Fujian province, in early 2004. The property, to be named the Shangri-La Hotel, Fuzhou, will be located in the heart of the 5,000-year-old city, which is located on the southeast coast of China. Nearly half of Shangri-La’s 38 hotels are located in China. The company said it will open two other hotels in that country in July 2003, in Zhongshan and Zhengzou. Shangri-La CEO and Managing Director Giovanni Angelini, said the fact that China has entered the World Trade Organization presents opportunities for that region of the world. “Shangri-La is very committed to expansion in the Chinese mainland,” said Angelini. The Fuzhou hotel is being designed by Tokyo-based KKS Architects and Singapore-based Wilson Associates. Shangri-La’s other properties are located in Fiji, Hong Kong SAR, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, singapore, Taiwan and Thailand.
