DENVER— Sage Hospitality Resources has launched “English as a Second Language” classes for employees in 10 of the company’s metropolitan Denver hotels. According to Sage, it is one of the first such programs in the Denver business community that has been geared to assist non-English-speaking employees in an effort to provide skills that assist in their field. “The ESL program has allowed Sage Hospitality to promote our core values of professional and personal growth among our employees. In turn we get associates that can better communicate with our guests, which is a valuable end result,” said Walter Isenberg, Sage president/CEO. He indicated that Sage’s human resources department worked to create a partnership between the company and “the Spring Institute and the city of Denver to launch this unique program.” The Spring Institute, a non-profit training and consulting group, taught the first set of classes, which were tailored to focus on hotel vocabulary, as well as on basic English necessary to grow in Sage’s employees’ communities. Funded by a grant from the Colorado Department of Education, the students also spent time running through possible dialog and role-playing interactions between hotel employees and guests. As a result, an overall improved work environment and team spirit has emerged at participating hotels, noted the company. Sage started the second 10-week program last month.
