SUFFOLK, VA A $21 million deal could be reached tomorrow morning on the riverfront hotel project here that is expected revive the city s fading downtown district.
The Industrial Development Authority has scheduled a special meeting to vote on an agreement with Stormont Trice Development Corp. to build a hotel, conference center, marina, and park at Constants Wharf. If a deal is announced, Stormont Trice will begin construction this summer on the Hilton Garden Inn downtown and open it by the fall of 2002, according to Richard Stormont, chairman/CEO of the Atlanta-based hotel group.
A deal would end a nearly two-year effort to get the hotel project approved. Anticipating that the project will lead a comeback of the lackluster downtown, city officials have created an office to begin promoting tourism. (2/19/01)
