SAN FRANCISCO As previously reported by HOTEL BUSINESS., hotel chains such as Wyndham International and Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide are using daily surcharges to cope with the ongoing energy crisis in California. Wyndham began charging $3.50 per night at its 21 California hotels in January. Starwood added $2.50 per night on February 5 for hotels it manages or owns in California, Oregon and Washington. Marriott International said it also plans to use surcharges to battle extremely high energy costs in the West.
The charges are expected to stay in place until the California energy crisis ends and gas prices drop, the companies said. Monthly gas bills at some hotels have tripled, they said. (2/23/01)
