BENSON, AZ— City officials here have taken the first step toward putting a large resort and timeshare community next to Kartchner Caverns. Earlier this week, the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission voted 5-1 to proceed with the 180-acre rezoning needed to build the luxury development. However, the final decision on the Whetstone Springs Resort rests with the Benson City Council which can’t vote on the rezoning for a minimum of 60 days, due to differences between the state Parks Department and the developer, Pat Lopez. The resort will include 216 luxury villas, 128 casitas, a spa, lodge, restaurant, garden, amphitheater, grocery store, swimming pools, tennis courts and a helicopter landing pad.
