Protestors Surround Melbourne Hotel

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA- Crown Casino and Hotel in Melbourne was surrounded by thousands of protesters this weekend who were demonstrating against the World Economic Forum held at the same site.
Police set up concrete barricades and fences around the perimeter of the hotel- a sprawling complex with dozens of restaurants, theaters and shops. The protesters, vowing to disrupt the meeting, massed around the entire circumference of the hotel and kept traffic from entering or leaving. The protestors also caused practice delays and cancellations for U.S. Olympic mens and womens basketball teams, which are staying at the hotel. (9/11/00)
