FT. LAUDERDALE— Broward Countys plans to build a convention center hotel were put in cold storage this week, after county commissioners decided the timing was not right to move forward. Local tourism officials instead were told to work with private hotels to find the rooms needed to attract major group meetings. Officials determined the area hotel industry is still recovering from last years terrorist attacks and that more land near the convention center may be needed to build a successful hotel, reported the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. Plans for the hotel may be reconsidered in January, officials said. The decision will likely mean that the county will not be able to attract the biggest conventions. As previously reported by HOTEL BUSINESS®, the convention center hotel project here has been up in the air since August 2001, when the county ended its four-year rocky relationship with developer R. Donahue Peebles. SOURCE: South Florida Sun-Sentinel
