UPPER SALFORD, PA The Spring Mountain ski resort in Pennsylvania is set to open December 16, and knowing better than to count on Mother Nature, the Buckman family, which owns resort, has installed a $1.5 million, fully automated snowmaking system for the season. The new system allows the resort to make snow at higher temperatures. The Buckman s said that the regions fickle winter weather was a factor in making the investment. The family also upgraded chairlifts, constructed a half-pipe for snowboarders and a double-black diamond trail. Other improvements include a renovated lodge and banquet hall, and a campfire area near the base of the main slope. In a public-private partnership finalized earlier this year, Montgomery County, Upper Salford Township and the Buckman family agreed to buy the 183-acre resort, which was closed last season, and preserve it as open space.
