Outrigger To Develop New Waikiki Hotel Project

HONOLULU— Outrigger Enterprises plans to redevelop 7.9 acres in the Lewers-Kalia area of Waikiki into a new retail entertainment and hotel project. The $300 million, multi-year redevelopment project, named Waikiki Beach Walk, will feature a central plaza, wide sidewalks, tropical foliage and water displays, and vintage Waikiki architecture. The project involves the incremental phase-out of several of the companys older hotels, and the simultaneous redevelopment of the area into a new hotel-retail, mixed-use destination. The most recently built hotels will see a substantial upgrade, together with the addition of new meeting and banquet facilities to complement the 3,500-room complex operated by the company. Phase one of the renewal project is scheduled to begin in 2003, and includes construction of a retail entertainment complex in the place of three older hotels: the Edgewater Lanais, the OHANA Coral Seas, and the OHANA Edgewater. Phase two involves replacing the OHANA Reef Lanai, the OHANA Royal Islander, and the Malihini Hotel with a new 890-room hotel. Pedestrian bridges will connect the new hotel to the phase one meeting center. Phase two is slated to break ground in 2006, and the entire project is estimated to cost $300 million.
