PORT ST. LUCIE, FL— A venture which includes Miami Dolphins owner H. Wayne Huizenga and Spartanburg, S.C.-based OTO Development LLC is on track to bring about 350 new hotel rooms to St. Lucie County. OTO bought 13 acres last month in Fort Pierce, where it intends to open a 110-room Fairfield Inn & Suites in about a year. The hotel developer also has applied for approval to build a 125-room Residence Inn by Marriott and a 114-room Courtyard by Marriott in Port St. Lucie. Huizenga and former Extended Stay Chief Executive Officer George Johnson Jr. are the largest investors in OTO, which has 46 hotels open or in the works across the country. The hotels typically cost $16 million to $20 million each. OTO will start construction on a Homewood Suites and Springhill Suites at I-95 and 45th Street in West Palm Beach within 45 days, and the company is on the lookout for other sites in the region, Oakes said.
