NYC Vying For 2012 Olympics

NEW YORK— According to the The New York Times, NYC 2012 has spent the past two and a half years building a case to play host to the 2012 Summer Olympics in Manhattan, the New Jersey Meadowlands, and the Nassau Coliseum. The group hopes that after developing a complex system of subway, rail, and ferry services to transport spectators, athletes, coaches, and other Olympic officials during a period of reduced mass transportation usage by local commuters, it will persuade the United States Olympic Committee that the city can handle the logistics. “The entire plan is built on being a mass-transit Olympics,” said Daniel Doctoroff, NYC 2012’s president. Later this year, the U.S.O.C. will narrow the group of eight American cities bidding for the 2012 Games to one U.S. candidate, which will be presented to the International Committee in 2002. The I.O.C. will choose the host city in 2005. New York is competing against Cincinnati, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington-Baltimore, and Tampa. SOURCE: New York Times
