BROOKLYN, NY–Five months after Hurricane Sandy struck the Northeast, causing major damage, hotels in New York and New Jersey are housing more than 1,250 families displaced by the storm.
In New York, more than 47 hotels in Brooklyn and other boroughs of the city are being used as public agencies struggle to find more permanent housing for the families involved. At its peak in New York, more than 3,000 families were being helped. In New Jersey, more than 5,500 have been housed in hotels at some point in the crisis.
Officials in both states hope to be able to phase out the use of hotels as temporary housing by the end of next month.
