WESTLAKE VILLAGE, CA— Nomadix Inc. reported that it has been granted a patent on a technology central to providing wireless Internet access at hot spots. Nomadix, a privately held firm which sells hardware and software for such Internet access points, said its patent covers methods to redirect a user automatically to an Internet service providers sign-up page without changing their browser or home-page settings. Hot spots are public Internet access points where anyone with the proper hardware can get online. Virtually every wireless Internet provider uses some form of redirection when people connect to their network at such hot spots to get them to sign up for access, Nomadix noted. The patent was filed in December 1999 and granted last October.
