NEWPORT BEACH, CA— The City Council here communicated to Regent Newport Beach Resort developer Stephen Sutherland that it would review plans for the proposed 147-room resort hotel on Balboa Peninsula, noting that public approval of the project would carry some weight. By a 4-3 vote, the council agreed to begin reviewing plans for the $28 million hotel along West Balboa Boulevard, despite some council members who said the project would benefit the city but would never win a public vote, as required by the Greenlight Initiative. Project opponents have warned the council and the developer that they can expect a fight in a series of planned public hearings. According to the Orange County Register, Sutherland said he is confident a set of small community forums will help convince residents of the projects merits. He also plans to go door-to-door in the neighborhood. He says the hotel would generate $3 million annually for the city in taxes and from the lease of the 8-acre, city-owned site.
