SALT LAKE CITY The 24-story, 775-room Grand America hotel is set to open March 20 here. Its owner, Earl Holding, has designed the property in the hopes that its unique design will help the Grand America garner five-star status.
The hotel, which features a two-acre courtyard, interior marble and a granite facade, was designed to evoke images of classical Europe. Guestrooms include data ports, down comforters, furniture from France, leather-top desks, Italian marble bathrooms and doorbells at the entrances.
Together with the Little America, Earl Holding s other major hotel in downtown Salt Lake City, the two properties will provide more than 1,600 rooms and almost 100,000 square feet of meeting space. These properties will offer enough room to host major conventions and conferences within the two sites and may open a new market for convention and meeting business in the city by luring companies and groups that previously bypassed the city because it involved renting rooms at numerous hotels.
The Grand America is already booked for the 2002 Winter Olympics and NBC, the official Winter Games Broadcaster, will use the hotel as its headquarters. IBM, Texaco and Johnson & Johnson are committed to holding major meetings at the Grand America in 2002 after the Games. (1/26/01)
